Book Thoughts: Golden Name Day (Lindquist)

  • upbeat and joyful story of a girl who goes to stay with almost-relatives for a season
  • all of the family cares well for each other, bonds through their Swedish traditions and deeply loves Nancy, the main character
  • clean language

Type: chapter book
Ages: 7-12
Author: Jennie D. Lindquist

Fair warning: this book positively oozes sweetness. Everyone is so perfectly nice and thoughtful, it doesn’t always seem very realistic–ha! But it truly is a nice change in pace if your daughter is looking for a calm and happy book. In our family, we would classify this as a “bedtime book,” because it won’t get your heart racing with suspense or adventure right before you need to be falling asleep. 🙂

There is not much religion in the story, but they do make a point to attend church every Sunday. The book also ends with singing of a Swedish song about how safe God’s little children are because He takes care of them all.

The family’s traditions are so enjoyable to read about–I particularly found the whisk making to be interesting! Definitely check it out if it sounds up your alley. Now I’m hoping we can find the sequels soon!
