Book Thoughts: The World According to Humphrey

  • lots of good humor for young kids
  • each chapter ends with real-life “hamster care” tip
  • janitor obsessed with wanting a girlfriend*
  • a Halloween chapter (one devil costume)
  • some bullying but well-mended eventually
  • language: “jerk,” “gee”
  • good examples of positive attitudes toward responsibilities & problems

Type: chapter book
Ages: 6-9
Author: Betty G. Birney

Since this was in our Sonlight curriculum bundle for ages 4-6, that is the perspective I am reviewing this from. 🙂

*None of the “girlfriend” talk is particularly inappropriate, but it was a little much for the youngest ages.

My kids had plenty of giggles throughout the book!

One more thing—I tire of the ever-increasing secular tendency to make men and fathers look weak. This occurs at least once in the book, but is not a main theme.
