Deep truths are embedded into this final installment of the Wingfeather series. More than once I had to stop and make notes on something to further meditate on, such as how “remembering hurts” and how those without good earthly fathers can still find peace and love with their Maker.
Oh, and there was also a woven-in message about how, when we try to mix our God-created self with the world, oftentimes a monster is the result. This was not didactically included but simply a thought I had while reading. For the most part, younger readers probably won’t pick up on all of the above without prompting, but the seeds will be planted of the truth and goodness!
The story is compelling and un-put-downable. It’s not for the faint of heart nor the sensitive reader. Tears will absolutely run for most readers at some point. The bad guys are really evil, the good are admirably heroic, and there’s even regular insertions of humor that seal the deal. It’s a series you won’t want to end, and I can’t wait for you to read it.

And, as with the other books, here are a few awesome quotes:
“Kal closed his eyes, regretting, among many other things, that the last thing he would smell would be troll sweat.”
“Sometimes in the middle of the night, the sun can seem like it was only ever a dream. We need something to remind us that it still exists, even if we can’t see it.”
“She was surprised the Fang didn’t smash the door to pieces. The very second she had that thought, the Fang smashed the door to pieces.”
“Love runs stronger than blood. Deeper than any name you could give me.”
“She knew she had chosen well, because she had been chosen.”
“NOW IS THE TIME FOR COURAGE. WE MEET THE ENEMY WITH STEADY HEARTS, FOR DAWN HAS CONQUERED DARK SINCE THE MAKER SPOKE THE WORLD. THE NIGHT IS DEEP, BUT LIGHT RUNS DEEPER.”
“When you run out of hope, everything is backward. Your heart wants the opposite of what it needs.”
“We all forget from time to time, and so we need one another to tell us our stories. Sometimes a story is the only way back from the darkness.”
