Book Thoughts: Vivaldi’s Four Seasons (Celenza)

  • focuses on the main points of Vivaldi’s life which led to his creation of the “Four Seasons” concertos
  • communicates the remarkable power that music can bring to one’s life–just like a story!
  • illustrations are simple and good representations of the times (1700s)

Type: biographical picture book
Ages: 6-10
Author: Anna Harwell Celenza
Illustrator: JoAnn E. Kitchel

We’ve now read a few different books on Vivaldi (my children and I), and I appreciate this one a lot. It doesn’t give many details regarding other aspects of his life, but it was interesting to learn more of how the “Four Seasons” came into being.

The book even came with a CD of the music! If your copy did not, definitely find a way to stream the Four Seasons and read the Sonnets (appendix) for each of the four. You’ll be able to “hear” the story. Very neat experience for children studying music history.
