This was a short read written in a memorable way. The scene begins at one of Martin Luther’s famous “Table Talks,” when students would drop by to have theological discussions or hear him share things. This evening’s story was about the historical figure, missionary Boniface, and draws a link between his actions and some of our Christmas traditions in modern times.
The very first page has some German words and a handful of less-familiar terms, so here is that quick list for reference:
- ein frohes weinachtsfest = a Christmas festival
- dinner trencher = a plate or board
- stein = stone
- schwarzbier = dark beer
- salver = tray/serving tray
It’s definitely not your everyday Christmas story! But it was poignant and certainly one I’d have no qualms about re-reading. The heavier topics mentioned were all kept age-appropriate, in my opinion, but definitely take it all into account before deciding what’s right for your family.
Merry Christmas!
