Book Thoughts: We Were Tired of Living in a House (Skorpen)

  • four young siblings decide to “move out” and try all sorts of locations for their new home
  • each place gives them a new trouble, and they end up returning home to their parents’ open arms
  • wonderfully illustrated (the original 1960s version)
  • clean language

Type: picture book
Ages: 2-8
Author: Liesel Moak Skorpen
Illustrator: Doris Burn

The very first page spread of this story depicts grumpy parents and equally grumpy children. It’s not clear whether they “move out” because of a situation with their parents or with each other. Either way, I wouldn’t recommend thinking too hard on it–just turn the page and join them in their merry adventure!

Make this one of your summer reads! Though the season isn’t specifically mentioned, you can tell it’s around that time of year. Lots of summery activities. 🙂

I recently learned that Purple House Press has re-published it with the original artwork (like my copy), so definitely check in with them if you can’t find a copy. The illustrations are the best part!
