Book Thoughts: Third-Grade Detectives #1 (Stanley)

  • a class full of kids work to solve a mystery
  • they learn all sorts of ways police scientists solve crimes
  • quite a bit of peer pressure and competition
  • a romance between adults is speculated on by children
  • when the mystery is solved, it embarrasses one of the children
  • includes two puzzles for the reader to decode after the last chapter

Type: beginner chapter book
Ages: 6-8
Author: George E. Stanley

I have mixed feelings about this book. The public school classroom setting has proven to be a national disaster, and part of that (because there are, ohh, so many parts) is because of the peer pressure between kids all the same age. However, I won’t go down that rabbit hole right now. 😉

The pros of the book are the excitement of solving mysteries and learning new tools for doing so. Most kids surely will enjoy that part. It’s a neat way to introduce them to crime/puzzle solving if you want to wade through the cons mentioned above.
