This is one of my all-time favorite Thanksgiving books. It begins with the poor lady burning their dinner. She and her husband decide to check out the new restaurant on their street and end up with wonderful friends and forever memories.
The Russian children at first rush to protect their personal family time, but the adults soon show them how much better it is to be inviting to others! Sharing life with neighbors is most definitely the better option.
The final lines are so sweet:
“Well,” he said, ” I guess I’d have to say, my dear, that I’m most thankful that you burned our dinner.”
“Oh, Ed,” she said, “me too.”
