Book Thoughts: Sydney & Taylor Take a Flying Leap (Davies)

Sydney & Taylor Take a Flying Leap by Davies | keenlykept.com
  • the friendship between a hedgehog and skunk is strained over a disagreement
  • reconciliation is sweet and also exciting
  • gentle suspense (falling, brief threat of a predator)
  • fun & colorful illustrations

Type: beginner chapter book
Ages: 4-8
Author: Jacqueline Davies
Illustrator: Deborah Hocking

Sydney the skunk is always willing to help Taylor the hedgehog with his “Big Ideas,” but Taylor’s latest plan is just too much. This puts a temporary divide in their friendship, but things are mended quickly.

This book and Book 1 in the series (review here) are both great bridge books–bridging the divide between picture books and full-length chapter books. Kids will feel such a sense of accomplishment after reading a “chapter book”!

Davies keeps the reading level age-appropriate but doesn’t shy away from making the vocabulary more unique than many books in the same category. I enjoyed some of her word choices.

The story will particularly resonate with kids who dream of flying! Happy reading. 🙂
