Book Thoughts: Sydney & Taylor Explore the Whole Wide World (Davies)

Sydney & Taylor Explore the Whole Wide World by Davies | keenlykept.com
  • two friends, a hedgehog and skunk, decide to leave their cozy dwelling for an adventure
  • gentle suspense (a dog briefly chases the hedgehog, a truck almost runs them over), relatable moments for young readers, and light humor
  • wonderful illustrations

Type: beginner chapter book
Ages: 4-8
Author: Jacqueline Davies
Illustrator: Deborah Hocking

Get ready, parents…Your young readers may suddenly embark on adventures of their own after reading this one. Sydney and Taylor initially pack way too much for their journey (which is comical), meet a few new creatures, and experience life outside their small home area for the first time. It culminates in a final scene tucked back into their cozy home.

I love how Sydney, who really would rather stay home, goes all in on the adventure for his friend’s sake. And Taylor gets to test and strengthen his bravery a few times.

Definitely a great choice if you’re looking for more bridge books–bridging that gap between picture books and full-length chapter books. Happy reading!
