Book Thoughts: Stranded (Coleridge)

  • dramatic day rescuing beached whales
  • lovely sprinkling of challenging words mixed in*
  • mostly clean language
    (darn x3, Oh G*d x1, idiot x1, heck x1)
  • awesome representation of genders–men being manly and women being helpful

Type: chapter book
Ages: 8-12
Author: Ann Coleridge
Illustrator: Eric David

With a quick search, it appears this isn’t being published anymore, BUT you can find it used some places. Maybe your library will have it!

*Here are some of the fun words that will stretch your child’s mind:

  • paper nautilus
  • cowrie
  • motley
  • laborious
  • sluicing/sluiced
  • heebie-jeebies
  • puny
  • tarpaulin
  • mooch (32)
  • some whale parts that they define
  • capacious

I really appreciate when authors don’t dumb things down just because they’re writing for children. Besides the bit of language (see bullet point), this was a good chapter book. ☺️
