- lovely sprinkling of challenging words mixed in*
- mostly clean language
(darn x3, Oh G*d x1, idiot x1, heck x1) - awesome representation of genders–men being manly and women being helpful
Type: chapter book

Author: Ann Coleridge
Illustrator: Eric David
With a quick search, it appears this isn’t being published anymore, BUT you can find it used some places. Maybe your library will have it!
*Here are some of the fun words that will stretch your child’s mind:
- paper nautilus
- cowrie
- motley
- laborious
- sluicing/sluiced
- heebie-jeebies
- puny
- tarpaulin
- mooch (32)
- some whale parts that they define
- capacious
I really appreciate when authors don’t dumb things down just because they’re writing for children. Besides the bit of language (see bullet point), this was a good chapter book. ☺️
