Book Thoughts: The Story of Ferdinand (Leaf)

  • a gentle bull prefers to relax in the countryside, smelling flowers rather than participate in bull fights
  • originally published in 1936 and is still being published
  • mentions men poking bulls to make them madder
  • great black & white illustrations

Type: picture book
Ages: 3-7
Author: Munro Leaf
Illustrator: Robert Lawson

Overall, this is a surprisingly engaging read-aloud. In fact, it was my daughter’s favorite for quite a long time when she was younger (5 or 6). It’s simple and sweet. Enjoy it!
