Book Thoughts: Stories From Africa (Koop)

  • 6 true stories about God’s faithfulness
  • kept simple for young ages but captivating nonetheless
  • a few possible distressing points*
  • comes with large b&w pages for coloring
  • expands a child’s view of the world (in a good way)

Type: biographical picture book
Ages: 3-5
Compiled by: Kerry Lovering
Edited by: Marjory Koop and Marjorie Collins
Illustrated by: Doug Driediger and J. Douglas Thompson

*The possible distressing points (considering this is published by Sonlight for Pre-K ages) are:

  • an angry father uses a “heavy rope” on the back of a little girl and makes her sleep in the goat house
  • a suspenseful threat of a big thunderstorm
  • a scary lion encounter (no harm was done)

All of those are brief and quickly softened by “good” things. My most sensitive child handled it just fine, though I probably read those spots more carefully.

Do you have any favorite missionary stories/books? I always love to hear what others are reading to their kiddos. 🥰
