Book Thoughts: Snowballs (Ehlert)

  • using all sorts of creative materials, a whole snowman family is created
  • Ehlert’s artistic talents are clever and fun to study

Type: picture book
Ages: 3-6
Author: Lois Ehlert

There was nothing inherently wrong with this book, but it was probably my least favorite of hers that we’ve read so far. The story was initially confusing–it began talking about birds but then suddenly we were making snowmen. However, some of the subsequent pages depicted birds eating at some of their snowman supplies, so I guess that’s how she tied that up.

I do think most young kids will get a kick out of all the materials she used. They’ll recognize various items (nots, fruit, popcorn, raisins, wheels, etc.) and enjoy the bright colors! A handful of the pages go vertical, too.

To end on a positive note, we did really like Leaf Man, and recommend you seeking that one out for autumn/fall seasons. 🙂
