Book Thoughts: Scout 01 – The Secret of the Swamp (Prins)

  • a boy & his dog against the Nazi enemies
  • intense page turner
  • entirely clean language
  • properly gives God glory
  • some violence*
  • excellent addition to a WWII curriculum

Type: chapter book (historical fiction)
Ages: 9+
Author: Piet Prins
Translator: Harry der Nederlanden
Illustrator: Jaap Kramer

*As far as the violence goes, remember it’s 1940s war time in Europe. There is fighting, shooting, bombing, and general meanness. The boy gets quite roughed up a few times, as does the dog.

Almost never do I read a chapter book that is entirely void of crass language. It was a breath of fresh air!

The intensity is fairly constant, but it is broken up by an occasional calm that comes from their trust in the Lord.

Really hoping more books in this series are just as good, though they’re hard to find these days. 😢
