- neat story about a young Scottish boy and his family, year 1707
- little Mac grows immensely in wisdom, courage and thoughtfulness
- worthy example of how a Christian family handles various challenges
- boys and men do manly things (wrestling, rough-housing, etc.) — this is a good thing!
- language: x1 stupid, x1 shut up
Type: chapter book
Ages: 6-10
Author: Douglas M. Jones III
Some of the situations can be quite intense, so if your child is easily affected you might consider a pre-read. There are deaths, thefts, a kidnapping, someone contemplates suicide, and some other violence. However, it all brings about a character improvement in little Mac; furthermore, it makes the sweet moments that much sweeter. And yet, there were some loose ends regarding the stranger things–like, what’s up with the pastor? What was wrong with him? We might never know!
As for parents, you might want to read this, too! It provides examples (without feeling preachy) of how to disciple young people in courtship, how to bond as a family, and so much more.
There were some slow parts, especially at the beginning–we didn’t connect with it right away. But character development certainly grew over time.
My only other critique is for Canon Press’s audiobook–it really should have been a male reader. 😉 We’ve since obtained the physical copy and are glad to have it.
Overall, my children and I enjoyed the tale.
