The author alludes to a period in her own family’s life that led to the writing of this book and continues it in more detail in the final Acknowledgments (after the story). Perceptive readers will empathize with the Myhre family and their friends as they read this memorable tale.
Readers who do not yet know that much evil can exist among those with power are certainly going to learn a thing or two, but don’t assume it will be didactic in any way. Myhre’s writing talent shines in this last installment of her series. She never talks down to readers, and the pages keep easily turning till the end.
As in the other three books (links below), there is a fantastical element with at least one animal. Each one has been different. In this case, Komba the bush baby (galago) understands English but can only communicate to children. It’s definitely a fun element to the story!
I can now happily recommend this full series, though please do not assume the rec covers all her writing, public activity, and theology. (I must mention this as the books are published by a Christian company.) If you’re looking for a new series to read aloud to multiple ages, this one might just fit the bill. Happy reading!
