From feuding neighbors to shipwrecks, Rolf’s story is a captivating one. His steadfast and honest character is obvious throughout, especially in unfair treatment he receives.
Christianity is seldom mentioned, but one can clearly see the difference in lifestyles and character traits between the pagans (trickery, jealousy, dishonesty) and the Christians (considerate of others, honest, hard-working).
*The ghost scene mentioned above is strange. He (the ghost) fights with a man and is destroyed by another—the belief goes that if you cut off his head and lay it by your thigh, he will trouble you no more. It’s a brief scene but earns one of the men a nickname said 2-3 times later.
Male readers might especially appreciate this book. There is a strong masculine vibe, and a few of the men are fantastic role models. You may even find yourselves naming pets “Rolf” or “Frodi” in the future! I’m thankful this was in our history curriculum, because I might not have ever come across it. Definitely check it out for your family.
