- Russian babushka prepares to win first place with her egg decorating skill
- she ends up caring for an injured goose, who shows her gratitude in a beautiful way
- convo points: idol worshiping (traditional ikon art in illustrations)
- the depicted egg art reflects Ukrainian styles
Type: picture book
Ages: 3-9
Author/Illustrator: Patricia Polacco
One of the things I love about the Polacco books I’ve read is their Russian components. Having studied there, albeit only for four months, the culture and people are dear to me. She even calls Moscow “Moskva,” which is much more correct. 🙂
Note that this is a secular book–there is no mention of Jesus anywhere.
Otherwise, it’s a very sweet story. The Babushka sees the beauty in many things (calls them “miracles”), and the entire book gives a cozy feel.
Oh, and she doesn’t particularly appreciate hunters. 😉
