Book Thoughts: Ranger in Time 05: Journey Through Ash and Smoke (Messner)

  • fifth book in a historical fiction series with a time traveling dog
  • follows a girl living in Iceland near a threatening volcano
  • set in the Viking age and includes great author notes of further research
  • convo: mentions gods (such as Sleipnir and Odin)

Type: chapter book
Ages: 8-12
Author: Kate Messner
Illustrator: Kelley McMorris

Messner does a great job with these simple stories–and all based at very different moments in history, too. The girl in this tale, named Helga, has a tough job ahead of her to find her father. Her mother has gone into early labor and the nearby volcano is threatening to erupt! Ranger helps Helga find her father but not without some difficulties on the journey.
