- focuses on sibling slaves who run away from their Maryland plantation and are pursued

- includes great author’s note on her research and further reading suggestions
Type: chapter book

Author: Kate Messner
Illustrator: Kelley McMorris
What a great way to introduce children to this time period. It touches on the sad and very serious part of our country’s history in an accessible and age-appropriate manner.
There’s just enough suspense, difficulties in their journey and threats of danger without becoming too intense. The adults they meet along the way have a great secret system, and they are protected.
I’m quite enjoying this series!
