Book Thoughts: Ranger in Time 02: Danger in Ancient Rome (Messner)

  • second book in a historical fiction series with a time traveling dog
  • follows a slave boy and one particular gladiator
  • convo: the general gladiator culture & context (fighting to the death), prisoners awaiting execution

Type: chapter book
Ages: 8-12
Author: Kate Messner
Illustrator: Kelley McMorris

Another page-turning installment from Kate Messner! I appreciate her commitment to research and especially enjoyed her extra notes in the back. There is also a helpful glossary and further reading suggestions.

Below I’ll link to other Ranger in Time books I’ve reviewed. This particular one brings to life the burdens placed on gladiators back in Roman times. All the more intense scenes are kept fairly brief and the addition of the friendly golden retriever, Ranger, always softens things as well. Happy reading!
