*CONTENT WARNING: There are many mentions and sometimes vivid descriptions of how Christians were slaughtered in the evil days of Nero’s reign. It ranges from being burned, caged in with wild animals, whippings, and more. Sometimes children, including babies, are involved. The author purposely kept it limited so that adolescents could read it, noting that it was even worse in actual events, but it still sits at a high level of intensity.
At a certain age, children should absolutely learn church history. This book does a fantastic job at bringing it to life, despite the more difficult parts aforementioned. Woven throughout are poignant conversations, relatable concerns, and a page-turning story. Quintus has strong Roman opinions that, one by one, melt away as he learns more about Christ and witnesses Christians living rightly.
Truly, such courage and faithfulness! This story was impactful in our home. It provides for such good conversations as the author does a great job reminding us of God’s ultimate power over all creation. The devil is only allowed to reign when God permits it for His purposes. Suffering, in the end, benefits and builds the Church, and our lives will last for exactly as long as our purpose on earth does.
Definitely consider this title for your family when the time is right.
