Book Thoughts: A Question of Yams (Repp)

  • based on a true story in Papua New Guinea
  • a Christian father leads his family with wisdom and is a faithful example of trusting God
  • written from the son’s perspective
  • clean language

Type: short chapter book
Ages: 5-8
Author: Gloria Repp

Though the story is brief, it is impactful. It clearly paints the scene of a young local boy–what his part of the world looks like with bits of their culture sprinkled in. The locals who have not become Christians try to convince his family to return to praying to the evil spirits they worship, but to no avail.

The only even slightly cautionary note to make is that the boy gets bitten by a snake. Otherwise, it’s a short and sweet tale of standing firm in the faith!
