Book Thoughts: Pygo the Free

  • parable about the fatal consequences that result from chasing “freedom” the world offers
  • rhyming text and illustrations help illuminate the story
  • convo: disobedience and death
  • includes great discussion questions, related Bible verses, and further notes

Type: picture book
Ages: 4+
Author: Steven Warhurst
Illustrator: April Rees

Pygo’s life is a poignant reminder of what results from rebellion against our Creator. Parents, please note that it does not have the expected happy ending, but I believe it’s age-appropriate and a good way of illustrating the important truths of walking with the Lord.

There are references that only older ages would pick up on (like the fish is named Charles who teaches Darwinian theories as fact), but none of those are necessary in understanding the book’s message.

Overall, Pygo the Free is a solid read and an excellent addition to discipleship resources.
