Book Thoughts: Possum and the Summer Storm (Hunter)

  • a possum family’s home is washed away in a storm
  • the “neighborhood” of animals help them build a new one
  • language: “luck” mentioned
  • very cute illustrations

Type: picture book
Ages: 2-6
Author/Illustrator: Anne Hunter

Everyone is very friendly and kind to the possum family as they each help in their own unique way. The book left me with questions, though:

First, what happened to the mother possum? Babies that little have very recently had a mom. Are we making a “stay-at-home-dad” statement or is it just for fun?

Second, with a simple page turn, the whole family is suddenly out of the middle of the fast-flowing creek and safely up a tree. How did they get there??

Ha. Anyway, it was a cute book. Add it to your summer reads!
