Book Thoughts: Peter in Blueberry Land (Beskow)

  • a boy seeks out berries for his mother’s birthday surprise
  • miniature people help him find them!
  • convo: a wand is used to make Peter small, but magic is not mentioned
  • delightful illustrations

Type: picture book
Ages: 3-8
Author: Elsa Beskow

What an adventure Peter has! Being shrunk down to miniature, he sees a giant (friendly) spider and blueberries the size of apples. He rides a boat made from a piece of bark and a mouse with reins like a horse. All children will likely love this imaginative story!

Note on the translation: Since reading this book for the first time, I’ve learned from other reviewers that the original Swedish version was actually written in rhyme, making the English version more of an “adaptation” than an actual translation. Additionally, the original spoke of lingonberries while the word is translated to cranberries in the English. With Beskow’s charming artwork, I simply trust that the prose is as true to her story as possible.
