Book Thoughts: Over and Under the Canyon (Messner)

  • a mom and her young son hike up and down ridges of a vast canyon
  • they observe many kinds of creatures and activities unique to each one
  • attractive illustrations

Type: picture book
Ages: 4-8
Author: Kate Messner
Illustrator: Christopher Silas Neal

At the end of their little romp around the canyon, they meet back up with Dad who has set up their tent and campsite, so this would make a fun addition if you’re looking for camping books. We first picked it up, because it was very “Arizona-like,” where we live, though it didn’t mention any specific place. (The author’s note explains her inspiration came from southern California–similar terrain).

On a funny note, I was so distracted for the first three-fourths of the book why they would go on such a big hike with only a tiny purse carried by Mom. Where was their water?!?!?! They’re in the desert!! Ha. But a small water bottle appeared later on for the boy, and all was well…until later that night when they used their black light to discover scorpions in their campsite. Ugh! In all my family’s times of desert camping, we’ve refused to bring the black light. Trust me, you really don’t want to locate scorpions near your tent! Best not to know. 😉

The back gives facts for all the creatures mentioned (over 20) and points out further resources. Solid book!
