Book Thoughts: Beyond the Orphan Train 04 – Across the Border (Richardson)

  • fourth and final book of a truly satisfying series, set in 1912-1913
  • the family temporarily moves to Mexico, an unforgettable memory
  • characters grow in their maturity and spiritual wisdom
  • Ethan runs into trouble with local boys his age, but overcomes
  • clean language

Type: chapter book
Ages: 7-12
Author: Arleta Richardson

My original plan was the read the first book in the series and then allow my kids to read the rest (I don’t always do that, by the way), but the story sucked me in! It was a delightful little glimpse into days gone by as well as a story with true components (it was based on a truth with some fictional elements added).

I wish that Ethan’s gambling woes would have come more out in the open and been resolved more than they were, but it’s clear how we’re supposed to assume the outcome.
