Book Thoughts: A New Coat for Anna (Ziefert)

  • based on a true story which occurred soon after WWII ended
  • a mother is dedicated, resourceful and sacrificial for the sake of her daughter, Anna
  • precious story accompanied by poignant artwork

Type: biographical picture book
Ages: 3-8
Author: Harriet Ziefert
Illustrator: Anita Lobel

War can bring devastation for many years even after it ends. We get a glimpse of that in Anna’s story. The illustrations toward the beginning show dilapidated buildings and rubble, but it progresses through increasingly uplifting scenes. Lobel does a wonderful job depicting the situation. The lack of necessities is briefly described.

The loving mother-daughter relationship shines throughout and gives us a great example in positive character traits. Besides what is mentioned above, we gain a new appreciation and gratitude for our comforts. May we be this grateful on Christmas and all the days in between! I highly recommend the book.
