- one of the most beloved children’s book series!
- fantasy, allegory, mythical creatures, and many adventures
- language to watch for: a** (a lot in later books), gawd, gosh*
- convo points: alcoholic drinks, drunkenness
- some intense or suspenseful situations (consider pre-reading for younger children)
Type: chapter book set
Ages: 8+
Author: C.S. Lewis
Illustrator: Pauline Baynes
How does one truly write a review on these books? With each re-reading, something new is discovered! Though I don’t agree with Lewis on all theological levels, the incredible allegory he has put together here for all of us to glean from is a wonder. There were a few occasions where it impacted me a whole lot more than the kids, and I had to choke down tears to keep reading.
*For the most part, both the above language concerns and the other convo points are minimal. They were my only annoyance. The “a**” word is frequent in the last book because one of the main characters is a donkey, but it’s also used in a derogatory sense.
What Order to Read Narnia in?
I’ve seen both claims:
- Lewis wanted them read in publication order
- Lewis wanted them read in chronological order
🙃
Personally, I would recommend publication, because The Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe is an incredible beginning—plus, The Magician’s Nephew actually makes more sense (amidst all its chaotic confusion) when you’ve read LWW first. But neither one is the wrong decision!
Finally, I must say this is the most gorgeous set! Original artwork come to life with color. 😍
