Book Thoughts: Nana Akua Goes to School (Walker)

  • a girl is nervous to bring her Ghanaian grandmother to Grandparents Day at school, in case the children are mean to her
  • a unique and special way to celebrate another’s culture, using a quilt of all things
  • includes extra information on the culture–in particular, the tribal markings and Adinkra symbols

Type: picture book
Ages: 4-8
Author: Tricia Elam Walker
Illustrator: April Harrison

When a book celebrates sweet relationships that cross generations, it wins points in my book. The girl and her nana have a very close relationship, as do other children in the classroom who brought their own grandparents. It’s so fun for the children to see all the different ways people earn their livings as well as how they grew up.

If you’re looking for a book about cultural differences, family traditions and sweet relationships–not to mention the craft of quilting!–this is a great option. Enjoy!
