The story begins in the past, where the narrator’s grandfather immigrates to the United States at an early age. He works hard, falls in love, and lives to see 3 more generations of his family. He’s a loving father and grandfather all the way through and creative in salvaging his old garments.
There is another story based on the same folksong called, “Joseph Had a Little Overcoat.” See its review here.
If you are studying American history during the years Ellis Island was operational for immigrations (1892-1954), this book could make a nice addition to your studies.
It’s a sweet book overall and would be great for a bedtime read. Happy reading!
