Book Thoughts: Mr. Popper’s Penguins (Atwater)

  • delightful and funny tale of a man who loves his pet penguins
  • Mr. Popper wouldn’t be the best role model but is quite amusing
  • language: x1 stupid
  • convo point: pipe smoking

Type: chapter book
Ages: 5-8
Authors: Florence and Richard Atwater

This read aloud very nicely! I hadn’t read it since I was a child and couldn’t remember the details at all. My children (7 and 9) were entertained. It was non-suspenseful and gentle.

Mr. Popper definitely doesn’t lead his family like a man should–for one example, he’s clueless about the tons of money he’s spending that they don’t have)–but it’s all just a comedy. Don’t read too much into it. 😉

Lastly, we all loved the ending! Definitely check this out if you’re looking for a quicker (aka shorter) chapter book for your kiddos.
