Book Thoughts: Mountain Born (Yates)

  • gentle chapter book about a boy who grows up on a sheep farm
  • depicts admirable character traits such as diligence, responsibility, courage, and more
  • reader learns interesting details about keeping sheep
  • clean language

Type: chapter book
Ages: 5-8
Author: Elizabeth Yates
Illustrator: Nora S. Unwin

Though the story is mostly secular, the man who works on their farm appears to be a solid believer. He teaches the boy good lessons in a couple instances. This is one of my favorite quotes from the book:

“To Benj, life was a journey heavenward, and each day was a step toward that whole of goodness which he knew now in part.”

The book was very well-written and lovely to read aloud. It is definitely nice to have a mellow book to enjoy every once in a while!
