  • a brother and sister work very hard in hopes to buy a pony of their own
  • mild suspense, some expected setbacks, captivating for horse lovers
  • convo: drowning (not mentioned by name, just understood), tobacco/pipe smoking mentioned
  • language: x1 dang, x1 gol-durn
  • charming illustrations

Type: chapter book
Ages: 8*-12
Author: Marguerite Henry
Illustrator: Wesley Dennis

*I’d be quite comfortable reading this aloud to a younger age, so feel free. It’s only marked 8 due to the quantity of more difficult vocabulary.

Paul and Maureen, the two main children, are not only siblings but good friends, too. I love how this shines through the various scenes of the book, which, by the way, is based on various true events that happened on the islands of Assateague and Chincoteague.

Overall, this is a sweet book great for the shelves of young horse lovers as well as those living in Virginia or even on Chincoteague itself!
