You won’t want to put this one down! There were definitely some harsh parts–especially the culling discussions, which were occasional and throughout–but there was such a beautiful underlying imagery of light conquering darkness that I highly recommend it for readers old enough. Nine years old is the lowest I recommend.

It doesn’t take long to figure out who the antagonist is, because the book uniquely rotates between animals and writes from their perspectives. Early on, when we’re following the evil one, we “hear” him talking about his crimes and corrupt plans.

Periodically, a creature would pray to “the Heart” and these prayers (and moments of putting trust in their Creator) were woven in beautifully. As a whole, though, it did not feel like a religious book by any means. I believe the author purposely wrote it for a wider audience, and I applaud her for combining biblical themes with a whole new fantasy story. Other themes you’ll discover are honoring your leaders, forgiveness and enduring through suffering.

I’m hoping to continue in the series as I’m able, so you’ll likely see additional reviews. Happy fantasy reading!
