Book Thoughts: Mercy Watson series (DiCamillo)

  • comical tales from the life of a pet pig who is oblivious to many things (but never her hunger for toast)
  • simply and clearly written–easy for new readers to understand
  • fantastic illustrations
  • Book 4 depicts various Halloween images: witches, ghosts, jack-o-lanterns, etc.
  • romance: Book 6 has a man & woman going on a date

Type: beginner chapter books
Ages: 4-7
Author: Kate DiCamillo
Illustrator: Chris Van Dusen

Summaries of each book:

Book 1: Mercy helps her owners be rescued
Book 2: Mercy goes for a wild car ride
Book 3: Mercy catches a thief
Book 4: Mercy has a lively Halloween
Book 5: Mercy evades being captured
Book 6: Mercy goes crazy for popcorn

I’ve gotta be honest…my kids liked these better than I did. Ha! But they’re cute.

If you can handle the Halloween book in the series, I don’t think anything else will bother most of you. They’re clean reads!
