Book Thoughts: Hans Christian Andersen (Vegara)

  • great biography on the beloved fairy tale writer
  • story spans from his birth in Denmark to his impact on modern-day children
  • convo: shows back of naked emperor

Type: picture book biography
Ages: 5-10
Author: Maria Isabel Sánchez Vegara
Illustrator: Maxine Lee-Mackie

This was a well-crafted book! We enjoyed the “behind-the-scenes” view of how Hans Christian Andersen grew up and his perseverance toward becoming a famous author. The illustrations took a moment to get used to, but they really grew on us, to be honest.

Have you read any of the biographies from this series (Little People, Big Dreams)? I’ve only read a few but have been pleased with them. (That’s definitely not a blanket approval though!) Children’s biographies are my very favorite type of biography. They are succinct, hit the high points and give us a satisfying glimpse.

Great book!
