Book Thoughts: The Little Fir Tree (Brown)

  • a father brings one particular tree from the forest each year to be by his crippled boy’s bedside, returning it after Christmases to grow more
  • the boy eventually is able to walk out to the tree himself, which ends the annual uprooting
  • LaMarche’s illustrations are beautiful

Type: picture book
Ages: 3-6
Author: Margaret Wise Brown
Illustrator: Jim LaMarche

I wish someone would explain to me why Margaret Wise Brown is so popular. This book was one of her better ones, in my opinion, yet just so-so for us.

After I wrote the above, I saw a review saying they “sing about Christ’s birth.” My copy had nothing of the sort, so now I’m wondering if it was removed like so many books are being altered today. Regardless, this copy I am sharing was purely secular.
