Young Jack is initially baffled and a little unhappy at why his mother is making Christmas cookies for the needy when he feels so needy himself sometimes. This perfectly opens up the opportunity for his mother to tell a stirring story which continues to hold Jack’s attention even through a church service later. She had described how cookies were used to tell the gospel news to the poor and illiterate.
Jack’s young eyes were beginning to open as to how we as Christians are called to be cheerful givers, serve those around us and also have gratitude. His action in the end of the book toward an old man should give inspiration to any reader, young or old, to do these right things.
