Book Thoughts: The Knight’s Map (Sproul)

  • allegory for children, preparing them to trust the Bible and the God who wrote it
  • based on Jesus’s parables about the pearl of great price
  • reminiscent of The Pilgrim’s Progress
  • includes a great “for parents” section with discussion questions and Scripture references

Type: picture book
Ages: 4-10
Author: R.C. Sproul
Illustrator: Richard Lawnes

I’ll say, right off the bat, that parts of this book might feel cheesy to the adult. However, I still highly recommend it. I mean, how many picture books are out there instilling Truth into our children compared to not? Sproul is very theological sound and one can feel his passion through his children’s books. He desires children to know the Bible is trustworthy–every dot and tittle–and I deeply appreciate that.

The allegory is anything but subtle, yet it paints a beautiful picture of our journey as believers and what should guide us on that journey: God’s Word. And what is the treasure found at the end? Jesus Christ alone!

Sproul suggest some good Bible passages to read before this book: Matthew 7:13-14, 13:45-46, and 24:35. Combine those verses with the discussion topics at the back, and you’ll have the makings of a beautiful discussion. May your children be forever on the narrow path!
