Book Thoughts: The King and the Dragon (Shrimpton)

  • an allegorical telling of the Bible’s overall story
  • fantastic illustrations
  • caution for little ones: evil dragon portrayed, the knight dies (and then rises from the dead)
  • includes a note to parents and suggested Scripture

Type: picture book
Ages: 3-7
Author: James W. Shrimpton
Illustrator: Helena Perez Garcia

Told in crisp rhymes, I hope this book gets read to as many children as possible! It is a gentle yet biblically accurate way to communicate THE story–how sin came into the world and how it is ultimately defeated by Christ.

In considering when my most sensitive child was three years old, I believe this book would have stretched her somewhat but that it would have been appropriate. The dragon is not nearly as scary as other books (such as Dangerous Journey), but give the book a flip-through before reading it aloud if you’re concerned.

Children and adults alike should hear the gospel every single day, and this book is a beautiful way to do that. I’m thankful we have this one on our shelves!
