Book Thoughts: The Journey That Saved Curious George (Borden)

  • true story of the creators of Curious George, a Jewish couple fleeing Nazi invasions
  • wonderful illustrations enhance the well-written text
  • includes interesting scans of some original documents and other relevant photos
  • convo: one sketch shows Jesus on the cross in a cemetery, pipe smoking, one drawing of a woman in a towel (fairly abstract)

Type: illustrated chapter book biography
Ages: 7-12
Author: Louise Borden
Illustrator: Allan Drummond

I love how thorough this biographer is! We learned, in readable and succinct prose, how this famous couple grew up, when their lives crossed, why they changed their names, and so much more.

This book also shines a light on the worry-filled and chaotic fleeing done by millions, all trying to avoid oncoming invasions by the Nazis. The journey toward safety is hectic and exhausting, but the two always have each other and are occasionally graced with kindness from strangers.

There were one or two parts that made me suspicious of the author adding in something, but for the high majority of the story, I have confidence in her reporting accuracy. Highly recommend!
