- illustrated biography on Joan of Arc, a young French girl who helped defend her country
- convo: she frequently heard voices and saw visions, general battle talk with occasional deaths mentioned, an attempted suicide, burning at the stake (not described), mentions her changing into pants to protect her “from the crude advances of her jailers”
- talented artwork
- includes an author’s note and recommended reading
Type: very long picture book
Ages: 8+
Author: Diane Stanley
I recommend parents flip to the back and read the author’s note before embarking. Her historical information and suggestions might help families navigate the “voices and visions” Joan mentions throughout the book.
Whether you do that or not, I strongly encourage you to read the historical note at the beginning. It sets the scene and helps readers understand context.
If your children are quite young, this can easily be split into multiple sittings. It’s an oversized book and each page spread has one full page of text, so it’s a good long story. Well-written.
