Book Thoughts: I, Vivaldi (Shefelman)

  • mostly true biography on the famous violinist, Antonio Lucio Vivaldi
  • told in first person (by Vivaldi), readers get to watch him grow up and see how he ended up in his musical career
  • convo: Roman Catholicism*
  • includes a brief glossary and more information on Vivaldi/his music

Type: biographical picture book
Ages: 6-10
Author: Janice Shefelman
Illustrator: Tom Shefelman

*Be prepared for various topics of conversation here as Vivaldi was raised Catholic and the setting is in a culture predominantly Catholic. The first page’s text has the mother praying to Mary, later she makes the sign of the cross over her son, and Jesus is depicted still on the cross in three different illustrations. I strongly recommend parents be biblically prepared to discuss these wrongdoings.

Besides the conversation topics, this was a nice little book to add to any Vivaldi study. Listen to Classical Kids’ audiobook on his life before diving into the books–it brings them more alive!
