Book Thoughts: The Iridescence of Birds (MacLachlan)

  • short & introductory biography on famous artist Henri Matisse
  • only two sentences long, but the first a very long run-on (yet remaining cleverly readable)
  • unique artwork
  • one page depicts nude adults but quite abstract
  • more information on Matisse in back of book

Type: biographical picture book
Ages: 4+
Author: Patricia MacLachlan
Illustrator: Hadley Hooper

It could be said to be more of a biography of Matisse’s mother, but it includes plenty of Henri, too. We learn that much of his work is from his childhood memories and the beauty his mother created in their home. It can be inspiring to young artists!
