Book Thoughts: If Monet Painted a Monster (Newbold)

  • cleverly introduces children to famous works of art from different eras
  • illustrations are replicas but with monsters added (sometimes colorful and silly, sometimes pretty creepy)
  • creative & strangely intriguing

Type: picture book
Ages: 4-8
Author: Amy Newbold
Illustrator: Greg Newbold

If you have time, google up a bunch of these paintings–one on each tab of your browser. It is really neat to compare the original with what Newbold has illustrated. You could either do this the first time you and your child read the book, or after an initial read-through, going more slowly the second time. You’ll find most of the titles in the back appendix within short biographies on each included artist.

We haven’t read this married duo’s other similar books, but now I’m going to see if our library has them!
