Book Thoughts: Hooray for Diffendoofer Day! (Prelutsky, Seuss)

  • unfinished Dr. Seuss notes (at the time of his death) turned into a book
  • includes several of Seuss’s original sketches in the back
  • plot setting is in a government school with standardized testing, though it’s all made wacky
  • illustrations are disjointed (mixture of Seuss’s classic and Smith’s modern)
  • one modern illustration could be viewed as a meditative yoga position (yoga is not mentioned)
  • romance component*

Type: longer picture book
Ages: 5-8
Author: Jack Prelutsky, Dr. Seuss
Illustrator: Lane Smith

*The first “romance” incident was more creepy than anything, in my opinion. The school principal is “always there to watch” one of the teachers when she’s on a trampoline. Later in the book, she kisses him on the head and then the cheek, so I suppose since the feeling is mutual, it lessens the creepiness of the first scene?

I applaud anyone attempting to finish a Seuss story, but I don’t believe these guys accomplished it. It fell flat for me.
