Book Thoughts: Henry Huggins (Cleary)

  • popular chapter book for boys
  • Henry finds a dog and his life becomes much more exciting because of it
  • language: golly x8, shut up x5, darn x1, doggone x2, gosh x1, gee x7, several “dumbs” (about people) and “hates”

Type: chapter book
Ages: 6-10
Author: Beverly Cleary

As it was copyrighted in 1950, it is set in simpler times that don’t have technology at every turn. I appreciate how the kids are resourceful and don’t need to be entertained. Henry works hard and responsibly.

It just wasn’t our favorite book. I know there are huge Cleary fans in the world, but I guess we can’t all be one. 🙂 I actually remember not loving Cleary books when I was young and many of my friends loving them.
